Wanna Get Away

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

I run to escape. I am not saying that I run to run away from things. I am saying that I run to escape the normality of my surroundings. Running helps me clear my head and renew my focus. It is what I do to break away from the tedious pace of life.

When I am running, I am able to leave my life and the pressures that constantly surround me behind. Sometimes while running I can resolve some of the issues and concerns that are troubling me. Other times I am just able to suspend them in time. I return home to find them right where I left them. They have not moved on, they are waiting for me.

I run on rural roads. It is a surreal feeling to be running on 12 inches of highway with oncoming traffic approaching at 70+ miles per hour. To say the least I am always alert. Running in this way is metaphoric for me. Whether I am writing new proposals, writing my book, doing the work I do, or being a father, I am usually on the look out for the risks that are always out there. The healing power of the time away is somewhat miraculous. It keeps me sharp and energetic.

Running is what I do. I do not in any way mean to imply that you should become a runner. But I am wondering what you do to get away?

I call this activity "Time off for good behavior." By this I mean that I am allowing myself the time to go and do something good. I want you to find something good that gives you the opportunity to escape for a few minutes every day. On the days that I don't run, I swim. Every day I do something to get away from it all. I have noticed on the days that I fail to do this, I am a different me, and that me is very rarely the best me. Escaping for a few moments help me to find me at my best and to continue to set new and exciting goals.

Well – what do you do? If you are not doing anything, then I encourage you to find something good that you love doing and do it. Notice that I keep saying something good. That is because escaping to do something bad does not produce the same effect. You can be the judge of what is good and bad, just listen to your conscious and let it be your guide. You have the power within you to discern between what is good and bad. Use it wisely.

You are now free to roam about the Country.

See you on the road!

Andrew
