Time is an interesting commodity. It truly is the only scarce resource any of us have. Everything else can be renewed – but time will eventually run out for each of us.
I often ask myself the question – “What do I want to do with the time that I have left?” To me this is an inspiring question because it focuses me on the things that really matter in my life. Each of us aspires to something. The real challenge is making commitments that match and support our aspirations. It is easy to get side tracked and to allow the pressure of every day survival to overwhelm our desire and ability to reach for something more.
There are no two ways about it; when we want something different than what we are currently getting, then we must do something different than what we are currently doing and be somebody different than who we are currently being. Dream catching is a never-ending quest; and it is hard work. Too many of us are not willing to pay the price and settle for the easy way out. What is the easy way out? The easy way out is taking the first opportunity or career that meets our current needs. 20 years later many find themselves stuck living a life they never dreamed of – yet it is the life they pursued.
The great news is that it is never too late for any of us to grow. Don’t be afraid of growing. It takes time, there is no such thing as overnight success. Success comes to each of us one step at a time. If you truly aspire today – then start pursuing that aspiration today. Ask yourself – “What am I committed to do in order to fulfill my aspiration?”
The aspiration driver is a question many of us fail to ask. We don’t ask it because it is simple. The question I refer to is – “What is the smallest thing I can do today to move toward fulfillment?” This question is critical because it is something we can do. Many of us tire out and suspend forward progress because our aspirations are too big to do all at once. It needs to be that way. When our aspirations are small they do not inspire or move us toward our very best self. I can’t fulfill my true aspirations in one day, but I can do something small every single day. If I ask myself that question – I stay focused and engaged. Time passes and success is measurable.
The first step is identifying what you want. Then you must identify what you are willing to do to get it. Finally you must do something, no matter how small every day that takes you one step closer to fulfilling your aspiration.
Time will pass anyway so you may as well be anxiously engaged in becoming what you have always dreamed of becoming. Isn’t it about time?
See you on the road!
