I was sitting on the plane last night getting ready to head to Argentina. Fellow passengers were still boarding and I was doing my best to take advantage of my last few minutes to communicate with the world. I was emailing, texting and calling with a frenzy because I knew once the door closed I would be disconnected from the virtual world and and even the real world. My only reality would be what was going on inside of the plane for the next several hours.
I knew the time was running out and so I began to wind the conversations up so that I could power down without being told. In an instant, I was offline. I went though my worry-wort checklist that I always go through every time I fly and settled into my seat.
The Door Is Now Closed!
Those of you reading have most likely experienced the door closing on an airplane. It really is no big deal. They use a hydraulic system to close it tight and then lock it from the outside. It can be opened from the inside too, but they make sure all of the latches are closed tight on the outside.
When the door closed last night I felt an amazing sense of oneness with the plane and the other passengers. We were all now a part of the plane. Only the pilots had control of it, but even they could only operate it as long as they did not violate the Bernoullii Principle which makes it possible for the plane to fly.
All of us on the plane were united in purpose. We each wanted the plane to arrive safely and we wanted everybody on the plane to arrive safely. The hustle and bustle we felt as we jockeyed for our seats was no longer with us. We were seated and committed to whatever came next. What happened to one of us would most likely happen to all of us. We were no longer in control, we all became a part of the system. There were no counter desires, we were one in purpose.
Riding On The Planet Together
I kept thinking about this sense of oneness and then wondered what it would be like if we could discover this same sense of unity in the world. The plane is a microcosm of the world we live in. All we have to do is add a "t" to the word plane and we make the word "planet". We are all on this planet together and just like me and the other passengers on the plane, we all want the same thing. We want safety, peace, love from others, understanding, and fulfillment. We want to arrive at our destination and find all well.
At that moment on the plane it was so easy to see. It was crystal clear. The power of this wonderful vision is now fading, but the message will never fade. We are more alike than we are different. We focus too much on our differences. Our differences will always exist and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Can you imagine how boring life would be if we were all the same. Some of us will be fortunate enough to ride in First Class, but most of us will ride in coach. I don’t see a problem with that as long as we are willing to lend a hand when needed.
Being One With The World
You and I get to choose every day how we will make the world a better place. Each of us have different capacities that need to be filled. We can become one with others by sharing and caring. This is easy to do when we recognize that none of us are in control and we are all just a part of the system. We belong to it and it belongs to us.
When was the last time you understood the need of another and lent a helping hand? How connected do you feel with the systems in which you operate on a daily basis? Can you look around the office and feel connected with your office mates? What do you see at home in your family? Are you taking an active role in those systems or are you just looking for the plane to land so the passengers can get off and go on their way?
I invite you to look deeper and see things as they really are. It is an amazing view! I hope you don’t miss it!
