The other day, a friend of mine asked me about my exercise habits. She wanted to know what type of music I listen to while I am running. When I told her that I listen to the thoughts that are in my head, she responded by saying "I would never want to listen to what is going on inside my head." Her response surprised me. We talked for a moment about that observation and then parted ways. Her thoughts stuck with me and I began to examine the power of silence.
Sounds of Silence
I love my quiet moments. They refresh and revitalize my energy. I regularly give myself the gift of being in silence. I presents me with the opportunity to reflect on what is going on around me. It helps me make sense of it all.
I travel quite a bit by both car and plane, and my preference is to listen to what is going on inside my head during those activities too. The world is a noisy place. We are constantly bombarded with sound bytes that are purposefully designed to confuse us and persuade us to follow someone else's agenda. I want to discover my own.
Rise and Shine
I especially love the early morning hours. The energy generated by the sunrise and the song of the birds is incredible. These moments are sacred to me, because they completely belong to me. I love to get up early.
It is during this time that I make sure that what I do, is perfectly aligned with who I am. I love to examine the satisfaction I feel in my life and then consider how I can create more satisfying moments. When I see what turns me on, I am better able to focus my efforts in that direction.
The peace that comes from purposefully rising each day is amazing. I feel prepared to meet the new day, instead of greeting it with a frantic and frenetic urgency to get going. Rising early is a critical and important part of any plan for success.
Silence Is Golden
If you really want to know who you are, then you must make the time to regularly sit in silence. It is the only the way you can discover the glory that is burning within you. Your voice is the most important voice for your life. You must make time to hear it. Don't say you are too busy – make time for personal meditative moments and you will discover your untapped resources that will create great meaning and harmony in your blurry and fast paced world.
When was the last time you made time to be silent and still?
What time do you get up in the morning?
Are you regularly listening to your inner voice?
Just before Fred Rogers, of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood fame, passed away he was asked what message he would like all children to hear. He said, "Be still, and wonder". This is great advice for all of us. I dare you to get up a half hour earlier tomorrow so that you can sit in the silence and wonder about what is most important to you. I dare you to ride today without the radio on in your and listen to your own voice. Give yourself that gift. It is a beautiful thing!
