My Bags Are Packed

Monday, May 18th, 2009

IMG_0717 I am getting ready to pack my suitcase again. The time between trips this time was so short that I didn't even bother to put it away. It sat on my floor all weekend long reminding me that I would be leaving on another jet plane soon.

I am pretty particular about what I pack. I travel very light and only bring one carry-on bag. I refuse to check a bag, this means that I have very limited space and that I am also limited by the TSA restrictions.

I don't bring anything that I don't need. I experience living out of one small suitcase so often that I now realize that I don't need as much stuff as I once thought I did. I can get by on less, as long as I have my essentials. Space is a premium so I know what I need and what I can live without.

There are three things that I know I need; my wallet, my computer and my phone. Everything else is nice to have, but really easy to find and replace on the road if I forgot to bring it with me. I can't replace those three items on the road and I am not as productive if I don't have those three things with me.

The Suitcase of Life

There is a journey that begins for each of us every single day. It is called life. We only have a limited amount of space. Fortunately, we get to choose what we want to bring with us. Do you know what you need to be most productive? Are you giving enough thought to how you are packing your daily bag?

Some people choose to bring with them baggage from the past that is too heavy. The prospect of carrying those bags is haunting and causes many to grow so fatigued that they are unable to endure the trip or to find joy in the journey. Do you know what's in your bag? Are you carrying with you any unnecessary stuff?

Take Only The Best

When I travel, I bring things from my home that make the journey most comfortable. I go out of my way to leave behind all unnecessary items.

The same must be true for my daily journey through life. Unfortunately, life's baggage restrictions are not as clear as the airline's. Sometimes we think we have enough space to bring everything with us as we move forward.

When we carry damaging experiences forward with us, we usually do it in the name of lessons learned, and with a vow that we will never allow ourselves to be hurt or treated like that again. This keeps us focused on our worst moments and prevents us from becoming our very best.

Life's journey really only affords us a limited amount of space. We must choose carefully what we want to take with us. Your suitcase is empty every day. You get to choose how we will fill it. Today is a good day to lighten the load. Do you really need all that stuff you have with you? Does it really add value and propel you forward? If not, then don't be afraid to let go of what you don't need. If you find you need it later, it will be right where you left it.
